Dr. Ilkka Heinonen holds an adjunct professorship in exercise and cardiovascular physiology at the Department of Clinical Physiology and Nuclear Medicine and works currently at the Turku PET Centre as a Collegium researcher of Turku Collegium of Science and Medicine at the University of Turku, Turku, Finland. He is also a visiting research scientist at the Erasmus University Medical Center, Rotterdam, The Netherlands. He has collaborated extensively with numerous international researchers and laboratories in Europe, USA, Canada and Asia.
Dr. Heinonen received his higher education at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland, (Master of Sciences, MSc, Department of Biology of Physical activity) majoring in exercise physiology, after which he completed his PhD in 2010 at the University of Turku (Turku PET Centre and Department of Clinical Physiology and Nuclear Medicine) in addition to another MSc education in Health Biosciences at the University of Turku and close research collaboration and visits to University of Copenhagen, Denmark, during his PhD studies.
After some additional research activities in Finland, Dr. Heinonen in 2011 visited Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota, USA, for further research training, and moved to work at the Erasmus University Medical Center, The Netherlands, (Department of Cardiology, 2012-2014) to perform his post-doc research, after which he worked at the University of Western Australia (School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences, 2015-2016) as a Research Associate before returning back to Finland, where he currently lives.
